Step back in time with the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, a living museum on wheels and the inspiration behind our unique tiny train lodging. This historic narrow-gauge railroad, constructed in 1880, was once part of the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad's San Juan Extension, which connected Denver to Durango and ultimately to Silverton.
Originally built to serve the silver mining district of the San Juan Mountains, the railroad played a crucial role in the development of the American Southwest. It transported precious ores, timber, cattle, and sheep, as well as passengers, fostering the growth of communities along its route.
Today, the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad operates as a heritage railway, offering passengers a 64-mile journey between Chama, New Mexico, and Antonito, Colorado. This historic route takes you on a breathtaking adventure through steep mountain passes and pristine wilderness, crossing the New Mexico-Colorado border an impressive 17 times!
As you enjoy your stay in our tiny train homes, you're not just experiencing a unique accommodation – you're becoming part of a rich tapestry of railroad history that has shaped this beautiful region for over 140 years.
